Rio Tinto Maintains Thrust On Non-Core Asset Divestments As A Response To Weak Commodity Prices
This latest stake sale is a part of the company’s efforts to sell off non-core assets in order to shore up its balance sheet during a period of low commodity prices. All the major commodities sold by Rio Tinto, particularly iron ore, which constitutes the cornerstone of the company’s business, are currently characterized by weak pricing environments. Given the prevailing weakness in pricing, these non-core asset sales will help Rio Tinto boost cash flows and manage its debt, affording it greater flexibility to operate during a low point in the commodity cycle.

Volkswagen: Could The Cost Of The Dieselgate Scandal Be Lower Than Expected?
Falsifying emissions data has gotten the German group under the scrutiny of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and prosecutors from other countries as well, and has hurt the perception of customers, who thought they were driving a cleaner car up till now. This scandal could cost Volkswagen dearly in the near term due to fines and lawsuits, and in the longer term due to the loss of sales. However, there is a flip side to this. Depending on how the German group goes about controlling the damage, the total cost of the dieselgate scandal, might come down considerably.

In the tech world, it’s all about finding that next big thing that will drive growth and shape an industry for years to come. If you ask Google or Apple, they’d probably say the next big thing is driverless electric car technology. Behind the scenes, the firms are pouring significant resources into this project and, reportedly, it’s starting to bear fruit. Together, these moves signal the experimental phase of this project is perhaps winding down and these companies actually envision driverless automobiles as the new way forward. The Wall Street Journal says Apple will soon invest billions and ramp up hiring in hopes to deliver an Apple branded electric car by the end of this decade.

Momentum to change the export policy on US crude oil is growing in Washington, DC. The House Energy and Commerce Committee recently voted to end the four-decade ban on most oil exports. In the Senate, we see a potential bipartisan coalition forming around the notion of relaxing, to some degree, the current policy. A few commentators even forecast the ban will be lifted in its entirety by spring 2016, but that seems like a pipe dream given the Obama Administration's stated opposition to Republican-drafted legislation in the House.

EndoChoice -- Guts, Glory & A $100M IPO
There was a time when going public was all the rage. It still is for serial entrepreneurs who expect to hit major scale and want a lower cost of capital to continue feeding that scale. For some people an IPO isn’t in the cards but for Atlanta-based EndoChoice, a GI medical technology company, it was in the plan before they did their first seed round. Here’s a look at the major milestones they passed from seed to IPO and the logic behind their ascent from a napkin in 2008 to $61Million in revenue in 2015 with ready capital to keep going.

One of the signs in gaming before the floor falls out from beneath you is that of wanton excess. This year’s Tokyo Game Show had that in abundance, not from console publishers mind but the mobile gaming contingent. Yet in Japan, many feel the market has peaked so the excess was very telling.

3 Reasons Why Executives Should Use Twitter to Strengthen Their Own (Personal) Brands
With social media now a commonplace element of most business’ marketing plans, research indicates that three out of four CMOs believe it is an effective tool to help build their business and 82% indicate it has helped increase brand awareness. While C-level leaders acknowledge the significant brand building benefits of social media, few are using the power of social media to strengthen their own brands. To help C-level leaders identify how to prudently begin a twitter-based effort to strengthen their own brand, I turned to social media guru Phil Glutting (@PhilGlutting), who is the owner of SMMarketing, and has over 127,000 twitter followers.

The Fed's Interest On Reserves Policy Is Not "Paying Banks Not To Lend"
The FOMC has decided not to raise interest rates – for now. But it's still widely expected that rate rises will come soon, possibly by the end of the year. Some people think that QE should be unwound first, but the Fed's plan is to raise rates first. The Fed will unwind QE gradually as the securities it has purchased mature.

The Week Ahead: Make Your Fall Portfolio Plans Now
The Fed's decision to stand pat on rates disappointed investors as those who have been finding fault with their strategy for many years had something more to complain about while others were understandably concerned over their cautious view of the economy.
The market weakness on Friday is likely a sign that the market's rebound from the August 24th lows is over. I am still not expecting a major decline to significant new lows but it is possible. In my experience when the WSJ recognizes the flag or pennant formations it is less likely to be resolved in a classic technical manner.
I do think that the investors should be using the current market decline to start making solid plans for what they will do with their portfolio in the coming months. This is true for those who already have a stock portfolio as well as those who are in cash on the sidelines. The failure of investors to have a concrete plan for their portfolio often means that they end up reacting emotionally which adversely impacts their portfolio.
Let's look at the likely scenarios over the month or so and why it will be important to take a proactive approach to managing your portfolio.

For certain corporations -- like CBS, Disney, Yahoo and even Facebook and Google -- success in fantasy football is much more of a sure thing. Or at least that's what one new Wall Street report hypothesizes.

Micron: Signs of Stabilizing PC Demand And A Focus on New Growth Segments Bodes Well
At the Citi 2015 Global Technology Conference last week, leading memory products manufacturer Micron Technology admitted to seeing signs of stability in the PC market, with reductions in inventory throughout the network and the channel. This could give some breathing room for the company, which has seen a steep decline in its valuation since the start of 2015. Year to date, Micron’s stock is down more than 50%. Weaker-than-expected PC sales, adverse currency headwinds, and Micron’s guidance that its DRAM and NAND output (or "bit") growth will lag that of the market in calendar year 2015, are some of the key factors that have contributed to the weak investor sentiment around the company.
